The majority of e-commerce storefronts utilize solid-colored backgrounds in their product imagery. There are many benefits to each different color, and your professional product photographer should be knowledgeable about how to choose and use the colors to highlight your product(s) in the best light (pun intended)!
As someone who earned their B.S. in Marketing and a minor in psychology, and who worked in the marketing industry for several years, I love helping my clients choose the best colors for their product photos based on research-driven knowledge of the psychology of colors (what emotions buyers feel when they see a particular color used in marketing or advertising).
A white background is sometimes required by certain sales platforms such as Amazon, so the benefit of a white background is straightforward in this case – adhere to their listing rules! If a white background isn’t required by the platform(s) you’re trying to list your product(s) on, white can still be a great option. It creates a sleek and uniform look and draws the buyer’s eye to the product features.
When you choose a gray or off-white background for your professional product photos, it keeps your photos looking fresh and minimal while adding a bit of dimension to the photos. This works well for many product lines that want to look fresh – laundry brands, skincare brands, and makeup brands, to name a few. Plus, if your product is white, you don’t want it blending into all-white background!
Choosing a black background is smart when you want your brand to look upscale and expensive. This works great for luxury brands such as jewelry and watches, high-end clothing, wine, and more.
A colored background, other than white, black, or gray, can elicit a variety of emotions from your potential buyers. While much of the psychology of colors has to do with how the colors apply to your specific brand or product, here are some of the most applicable emotions associated with colors:
- Red: love and romance; excitement and energy; intensity
- Orange: happiness and wealth; sophistication
- Yellow: laughter and warmth; optimism; intensity and hunger
- Green: nature and tranquility; envy; health and money; harmony
- Blue: focus and serenity; wisdom and truth; cold and un-appetizing
- Purple: royal and wealthy; exotic and spiritual; mystery and respect
- Brown: warmth and security; stability and reliability; nature and organics
- Pink: love and romance; agitation
The vibrancy of a photo can also effect the emotion of the buyer. Muted, pastel colors often elicit calm and peacefulness; warm colors such as yellow and orange can make the buyer feel hungry; and bright and neon colors often imply urgency.
Many colored backgrounds can complement the brand or product they’re being used with; for example, a green background works well with eco-friendly products, or a color that’s complementary on the color wheel to one used in a product’s label or packaging can help to highlight the product.

All the same color psychology pros and cons as solid-colored backgrounds apply to lifestyle product photography. So you’re probably asking, “what’s the difference, then?” Lifestyle product photography can use additional props or non-solid-colored scenery to help tell your brand story.
Props can be anything from an apple to geometric shapes to leaves – it all depends on what type of prop showcases your products best. The background can still be a solid color, or a more detailed backdrop such as one that’s patterned, marble, wood, or natural.
As your professional product photographer, I will always work with you to find out your brand story and consider which elements will be most effective at portraying it.

Depending on the product(s) you’re selling, you might need or want to include multiple products or items in your photos. And, whether you’re including one or multiple items, you may want to include more than three props or props that aren’t already in my collection! As a professional product photographer, I’m equipped to handle many of these requests, and am happy to offer add-ons so that you have flexibility in the number of products and props included in your product photos.

When you request a quote for professional product photography, I’ll get back to you with details about how to proceed with booking your shoot and choosing your details!
BOOK
Once we’ve worked out the details of your desired shoot, you’ll be able to solidify your booking online. You’ll also send me your product(s) so that I can use them in the shoot!
PREPARE
Once you’ve booked me as your professional product photographer, we’ll collaborate to come up with the most effective and creative ways to showcase your product(s).
shoot
Once I’ve received your product(s) in the mail, I’ll get to work on your shoot according to the details we’ve decided on! You’ll be provided with an expected timeline when booking your shoot.
VIEW
Once your professional product photos are edited and ready to go, I’ll provide you with a link to your password-protected digital gallery, where you can view and download your final photos!
The cost of professional product photography depends on the number and style of photographs you desire, the size and quantity of your product(s), and creative aspects such as the background and props. You can find the cost per photo for a solid-colored background, lifestyle photos, and add-ons by scrolling up on this page. If you have a specific request, simply send me a request and I’ll get back to you with a quote!
To book me as your professional product photographer, send me a request, and once we’ve had a chance to discuss your desired photos, you’ll be able to book my services online!
No, you don’t need to be located near me in order to hire me as your professional product photographer! If you aren’t located in the Pittsburgh area (or even if you are), you can ship your product(s) to me via the shipping service of your choice.
All products need to be dropped off or shipped to me in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Shipping costs are not included in the cost of your professional product shoot. If you prefer to drop off your product(s), we will arrange a day and time for drop-off in advance!
If you’d like your product(s) shipped back to you after your photos are finalized, let me know ahead of time so that I can save all the shipping materials. Once I’m ready to ship your product(s) back, all you’ll need to do is provide me with the applicable prepaid shipping label via the United States Postal Service (USPS).
The turnaround time for your final, edited product photos depends on the number of photos you’re purchasing. I’ll provide you with an expected turnaround time during the booking process. Don’t forget to account for the time it takes to ship your product(s), as turnaround times begin the day I receive them!
You will be granted a commercial license that allows you to use your final edited images in your business’s sales listings, marketing, and print channels.
Without written permission from MKB Photography, you will not be allowed to resell or redistribute your photos to third parties or enter them in any contests, nor will you be allowed to use them in any pornographic, illegal, libelous, scandalous, or such other manner that would damage the image and reputation of MKB Photography.
You are not permitted to alter the images, including adding filters or editing other aspects (except for cropping as needed to adhere to listing requirements) without written permission from MKB Photography.
Whether you want multiple products photographed individually or together, I can often accommodate your needs! Some product size constraints apply, but we’ll discuss this before you book, if applicable.
When you submit a request with your shoot details, I’ll be able to get back to you with your options!
You can choose between a solid-colored background or something different, such as a marble, wood, or other background. When you send me a request, we’ll discuss the backgrounds currently in my collection, but if there’s a completely different background you’d like, it can typically be acquired at cost!
If you’re purchasing multiple photos, you can certainly choose to have multiple backgrounds! You can choose all solid-colored backgrounds, all lifestyle photos, or a mixture of both.
If your product(s) require assembly before shooting, a nominal fee may apply. This fee will be included in your quote based on your prediction of assembly time, and will be adjusted after the shoot if the assembly time is different than predicted.
Clear instructions are always required for products that need to be assembled.
You will receive the exact number of final, edited photos that you purchase!
A shot list is a list of individual photo layouts to capture during a photoshoot. Details included in the shot list include the background(s), product(s), and prop(s) – how many there are, where they should be placed, what view should be captured (front, back, sides), etc. We’ll work together to create your shot list so that I know exactly which photos you’d like taken.
Before I photograph your product(s), I will always confirm the general layouts you would like used in your photos. If you want to be very specific, you are welcome to sketch the arrangement of the product(s) and prop(s) to be used in your photos, and I will do my best to replicate it exactly!
Your product(s) will need to be shipped to the Pittsburgh, PA area. After booking, you’ll be provided the exact address to ship your product(s) to!
I love when product shoots get extra creative! If you’re looking for a custom surface or prop that’s not already in my collection, simply let me know your request and I should be able to make it happen. Most custom surfaces and props can be provided at the cost to acquire them, but the estimated cost will be included in your quote.
Photos of your product(s) may be used in MKB Photography marketing, including on the website. If you prefer not to have your photos used in MKB Photography marketing, you can purchase a copyright transfer, which transfers ownership of the photos to you and restricts MKB Photography’s use of the photos. Let me know if you’d like a copyright transfer, and it will be included in your quote!
I photograph a wide variety of products, including jewelry, beauty products, electronics, decor, and more. Due to size constraints, some large or oversized products can’t be accommodated in my studio space, but if you have any questions about whether or not I can photograph your product(s), simply contact me and I’ll let you know!
At this time, MKB Photography does not contract models for product shoots. However, if you have a person or model that you’ve contracted that you would like in your professional product photos, there are some options I can offer. Please send a request and let me know your details!
